@legally_brunette_daily: Replying to @knuckles doing anything student loan related feels so Kafka-esque but here are my thoughts! #paye #studentloans #pslf #lawschool #loanforgiveness
Why is PAYE better for forgiveness (PSLF)? I thought RAP also did PSLF and waived unpaid interest

It’s different for everyone’s situation. I went with the graduated repayment plan since it starts out lower then gradually goes up. A lot of these cheaper plans are 20-25 years long so it’s something to keep in mind.. I chose one of the only 2 that are 10 years because 25 years is insane 😭

PAYE is way lower for me but I love how Rap prevents you from drowning in interest. I just can’t afford it

I was under the impression that if you chose RAP, you lose your previous forgiveness counts. Either way I chose PAYE, but I'm planning to actually pay off the loan in full.

There is not one answer to this question. It depends on your income and your family size. For some people, PAYE is going to be cheaper, for others, it will be RAP. And not everyone is eligible for PAYE. If you don’t take loans or consolidate on or after 7/1/26, you will have access to IBR or RAP. The newer version of IBR is essentially the same plan as PAYE but your first loans must be disbursed on or after 7/1/2014 to qualify. Otherwise, you’re only eligible for the older more expensive version. Pursuing forgiveness does not change the payment calculation for these plans but it does dictate how long you may have to pay. If you’re pursuing PSLF-just choose the cheaper plan. PSLF is a 10 year path to forgiveness, regardless of the IDR plan. If you’re pursuing long-term IDR Forgiveness (20-30 years), even if RAP is cheaper, you’ll have to pay 5-10 years longer than you would in IBR (20 years for the new version of IBR

You have to apply every year, then your payment goes down.

What I want to have happen is to go back to how the plan was before where it only needed 10% of your discretionary income. The 15% making student loan payments more unfordable.
