Former Delta customer service agent here. This is called Skip lagging. It is against our contract of carriage and will get you banned from the airline. Same with United, American, Alaska, any of them. You skip lag or voluntarily leave your journey incomplete, you will be banned.

Charging almost double to fly directly to the location that charges half just because itโs a layover is insane, if airlines didnโt do this, people wouldnโt do that! Norfolk to Atlanta shouldnโt be 450!

Flights to and from Norfolk are always crazy expensive. As a person who lives in Atlanta and from Virginia Beach I hate it. Bring back AirTran lol

I once skiplagged bc I didnโt want to make my last connection and just wanted to get off to catch a different flight on southwest. To get rid of the last leg delta quoted me $2.5k USD lmao

Chat, I travel every week for work. Of the 48 weeks a year I fly I often layover in ATL or CLT. Often times I do not continue and finish my flight itinerary because I can make more money stopping in these cities. I do not get banned.

If you want the real explanation: airlines have to compete with other airlines. In your example, Delta is trying to compete with SouthWest that has a nonstop ORF-BNA. So it is priced as such. As others have mentioned, if you skip lag, itโll work a few times, but eventually they will catch on and ban you.
