@chaoticgoodfeminist: the people calling complex vocabulary ableist think they are advocating for struggling readers. they are actually arguing those readers should never be challenged. that is not accommodation. that is a ceiling. your e-reader has a built-in dictionary. use it. #BookTok #monday

I'm an English major who reads a ton and I STILL find words in books I dont know. That's the easiest way to learn new vocabulary.

My favorite part is that most people use E readers and all you have to do is highlight the word and it will show you the ENTIRE dictionary listing (definition, pronunciation, part of speech, etc.).

one of the reasons why I read books is to learn new words "naturally" and not by memorizing, both in the languages that I speak and in new languages I want to learn 😁

I'm an Australian and I regularly have to Google americanisms when I'm reading, it's part of the fun of learning!

I don’t understand people’s want to stay uneducated. I have kiddos that brag to me about going up a level in home reading, it makes my heart sing.

I grew up in the 70's/80's and adored reading but often came up against a new difficult word, my Mums answer? Look it up in the dictionary. She passed in '92 she would be thrilled that we carry a dictionary with us everywhere. I still look up words, I will never stop learning and that's ok its ok to be human.

There are no easy or hard words. There's words you know and words you don't know yet. You can learn new words every day and every new word enriches your experience of not only books but your whole reality.

I grew up with a mom who routinely said, “Look it up!” with new words. I literally had to look up words she would use in the dictionary. It was frustrating at times, but invaluable in the long run 🥰

I don't understand how just using Google to look up a word is an issue, like so many times I havent known words and ive looked them up...

I recently came across the word "vicissitude". I am very well read, and I have no shame in admitting I had to look that up. that's how we continue to learn.

It’s as if folks are assuming that, once they finish high school/college, they’re “done” learning anything new. I still see and learn new words in my 40s and will continue to learn new words likely until I leave this mortal coil.

There’s something to be said for authors who create context that gives me an understanding of a word without needing to look it up. We don’t need simpler narratives. We need more descriptive prose.

I have a high vocabulary BECAUSE authors used bigger words, if i didn't know a word I looked it up and I still (very rarely) come across words I don't know and I genuinely love it, because I get to learn something new
