@artsyblevs: My advice for beginning art teachers! Whether this is your first year of teaching ever, or you’re changing your teaching trajectory from another area, I hope you find something helpful in this post. 💖 If I could add any more advice to this already loooong post it would be: ❤️Try not to take work home. Sometimes it happens, especially around art show season for me but I try to avoid it, especially since having kids. 🧡Get the kids involved with setting up supplies and cleaning up at the end of class. My class before kindergarten always sets up for them after they clean up their own supplies. 💛Not everyone will like you, or like that you teach art, or think it’s fair that your work looks different from theirs, and that’s ok! I try to stay in my lane and be the goofy goober I am. Sometimes people don’t think I’m funny. 😮💨 Take me as I am or not, this is me 🤪. 💚You don’t have to have an art show. Sometimes there might be a required district show or an admin that demands it, but it not…you really don’t have to have one I promise! If you don’t know where to start, I have lots of posts about running one. 🩵If you start to feel overwhelmed- get off of here. Find some inspiration outside, in a book, or from a real life fellow art teacher. The internet is weird and a highlight reel. Take a break when you need it. I have lots of posts on my IG feed about art room jobs, classroom management, organizing, art shows, planning, etc. etc. but this is a post from the heart. Things that are hard to explain but sometimes just need to be hashed out. I have received so many messages from people who are teaching elementary art for the first time this coming school year. I wish you the best year ever, and seriously, reach out if you ever have questions. Feel free to turn this comment section into a Q&A amongst yourselves! I truly have the best followers here! (I block the naughties 😂) 🎨. • • • • • • • • • • • #elementaryart #artteacher #artteacherproblems #artteachersofinstagram arteducation Art teacher Teacher life Teacher problems Art teacher problem

I would add that my first year I W I L D L Y overestimated how many projects my kids would complete! I lesson planned so many ideas that never saw the light of day in my class! Obv, you have fast finishers (and that’s a whole conversation, too), but my lesson timelines are generally a guess and usually take a bit longer than planned - except kinder! Long projects are tough for them. Also, take the time to do skill checks in a lesson. Even if you are sure you covered a topic (eg color theory) the year before, don’t assume everyone now knows it. Some kids never did LOL and some need a refresher. Slow down. That’s hard for me but good for kids! Anyway. My 2 cents! I love artsyblevs !!

Next Sunday is my first day as an art teacher. My idea is to make art like engineering. I will be teaching from kindergarten to sixth grade. In kindergarten and the first two years, there will be lessons and introductions to colors and art. In third grade, we will teach weaving techniques, in fourth grade, pottery and clay techniques, in fifth grade, glass techniques, and in sixth grade, the final elementary graduation project will be a free-form idea for each student to design and execute. Will the children cooperate with me, or will this be difficult for them?🎭
