@gokefarms: WHY WE DON’T ADVISE NEW FARMERS TO STOCK GOATS DURING THE RAINY SEASON! One advice we give at Goke Farms to new and intending livestock farmers is this: If you’re not experienced in goat production, avoid stocking goats during the rainy season. Rainy season looks attractive because pasture becomes abundant and green, but for goats, this period comes with serious management challenges. Goats are highly susceptible to diseases during this season, especially: PPR (Peste des Petits Ruminants) – a highly contagious viral disease that can spread quickly and wipe out a large percentage of your flock if not controlled. Pneumonia / respiratory infections – cold weather, damp housing, rain exposure, poor ventilation, and stress increase the risk significantly. Cold stress – unlike what many people think, goats do not tolerate prolonged wet and cold conditions well. Sleeping on damp floors or getting soaked repeatedly weakens immunity. For experienced farmers, these risks can be managed through: - Proper housing and dry bedding - Timely vaccination schedules - Strict biosecurity - Good ventilation without drafts - Supplementary feeding and vitamins - Early detection and treatment But for beginners, a disease outbreak can wipe out investment and discourage them from continuing in livestock. Our recommendation: Start with proper planning. If possible, prepare housing during the rainy season and stock when conditions become more favorable or work closely with experienced farmers. In livestock farming, timing is also management. At Goke Farms, we believe in helping farmers build sustainably, not just buy animals.
