My mother wanted babies, not children.

not me :
I grieve the loss of my mother every day…it’s especially hard since she’s still alive and wants to call me to tell me her problems so I can be her emotional regulator like I’ve done since I was 12.

I am GenX and grew up similarly. I figured out my mom didn’t really want to be a mom. She felt it was compulsory.

I held off and reading Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents for years and I recently finally did. It was really helpful. Recommend for anyone in this situation.

Question: Genuinely wondering. Have you ever had any discussion with her about WHY she gave so little effort to this mom thing? What was the answer you got?

My parents still think they can demand to know where I was when I don’t answer the phone. I’m 57. 😒

I went no contact with my parents. I know my mother has dementia so she’s probably forgotten about me which is not any different than when she didn’t have dementia so there’s that.

yea! I'm doing "parts work" with my therapist right now for this and she suggested that I take 9 year old me out to do something fun after our session and be the mom I needed when I was young. I thought it was silly but tried it and found myself weeping in a milk shake shop. it was kinda crazy but it healed something inside of me.

The romance novels turn to iPads when they get older 😩 Even when I make the effort to go see my Mom she can’t even look up from her iPad to show interest in her grandkids . I can’t imagine being uninterested in my kids or grandkids …just can’t relate AT ALL! I’ll be chasing my kids forever ❤️

Gen X eldest daughter here. If I could sum up my entire experience with my mother in two words it would be “cold indifference”

Neither of my parents were emotionally present. Now they're in their 80s and senile. It gets worse.

This speaks directly to my heart! Im also 59 and had an emotionally absent mom. Now im her caretaker. Talk about a shift in dynamics! She still knows nothing about me. And I have accepted she never will.

Thank you for this. Listening to this helps me to put things into perspective a little better and to try to understand all the shit I haven’t understood all these years and honestly always blamed myself. A lot of this was me growing up and now. I am grieving the loss of my daughter, her granddaughter, and that didn’t even change things.

GenX daughter here. I grieve the mother I never had. I miss the mother other people had. My mother said several times to me as a child that she wished she never had children. At times as a child I wish she never did either. Estranged by my choice for 10 years and my life is easier without needing to support and “parent” her constantly. And I healed by being a MUCH better mother to my own child. ☺️

I suffered with same thing. Emotionally absent parents. 😕 The trauma is real. Not once did my father come to watch me play baseball, nor ever take me to any of my ball practices. It was always my mother who had to. And she was just like how your described your mother. She was there in body, but not engaged with the child. The trauma is permanent and only recently, I see how it has affected me and with the relationships I tried to have with others. Yes, I'm a GenXer also. It seems it's how parents raised their children back then. I hear from so many other GenX'ers with the same exact stories, word for word.
