@scott.austin.martin: The two biggest coping mechanisms in the world are projection and avoidance. They work. They take away discomfort quickly. They just don't heal anything. I'm not here to tell anyone to stay in a toxic situation or keep tolerating behavior that crosses healthy boundaries. But my work is also not about throwing people away. "Just run." "If they wanted to, they would." I understand where those come from. But human behavior is rarely that black and white. We live in a world full of unresolved trauma. Many people were never taught emotional regulation, repair, or how to create safety in relationships. The moment we call someone a bad person simply because they were conditioned in certain ways and never learned certain skills, shame enters the conversation. And shame doesn't create change. Shame pulls the hood down before we ever get a chance to look under it and examine the engine. #relationships #relationshiptips #nervoussystem #menscoach #attachmentstyles

I don’t understand why people choose to NOT heal when they have a person who is willing to love them and grow with them, and yet they choose NOT to heal.

Do you ever take 1:1 clients? This is the type of mindset and info I’ve been looking for with my partner, and it’s been so hard to find with our therapists. Any tips for what to look for if you don’t take any clients?

I get what you’re saying. We both have childhood trauma, and I’ve spent 3 years in therapy. He refuses to go even though he knows he’s sporadically verbally abusive. Until he’s willing to face his trauma, his shadow, and do some of the hardest work he’ll ever do, I don’t see a way forward for us.
