@yuliaxgon: Pole dancing has a much deeper history than the version most people associate with American nightlife. Long before modern pole studios and clubs, pole-based movement existed in traditions like Mallakhamb in India, where wrestlers trained with a wooden pole as a kind of sparring partner, building grip, strength, endurance, and control. Chinese pole also has a long acrobatic history, using the pole as a tool for balance, climbing, inversion, discipline, and performance. These practices show that the pole has always been more than an object. It has been a training partner, a performance tool, and a way for the body to develop power through contact, pressure, pain, and repetition. That deeper history helps explain why pole can feel so healing for people today. Pole requires the body to work through discomfort. The hands hurt, the skin bruises, the grip has to build, and the body slowly learns how to hold itself in new ways. That process can become emotional because it asks you to stay present inside your body instead of disconnecting from it. When I saw the pole dancer in Drake’s “Ran to Atlanta” music video performing above the cars, it reminded me that pole belongs to a much larger human history of acrobatics, strength, ritual, and release. For me, returning to pole means reconnecting with a practice that teaches the body how to feel powerful again. #poletok #drake #anthropology #festival #india
