I think people invent these bottomless lists of requirements and icks because no one knows how love actually feels, or they’ve long since forgotten. They try to invent a Frankenstein’s monster out of dozens or hundreds of filters but it never fulfills what love is meant to.

I think judgment of the performative mail thing is kind of about timing in the Zeitgeist. like you didn't see guys doing this stuff until after they were told they were allowed to do it. and when you do things because you are told that you can do them, that is performative.. rather than doing them and not giving a crap what other people think

I think of it like, if a couple has a baby, the roles of mother and father are a little irrelevant. They both will have to 'parent' the baby in the same ways at times. It's not feminine for the father to burp the baby and sing lullabies, it's just his turn. Just the same, I can read in the park, cook, shop, even admire the color pink and still be sure of the man I am.

the thing that did it for me was how anything that was considered as a "performative man" it was a man doing something feminine. did not gaf about any "performative man" opinions after I realized that. it started calling out a small subset of guys acting in order to get female/women's attention. then it just turned into "hey guys that's gay stop doing that" basically.

I wouldn’t necessarily say it was regressive because nobody was making fun of the individual parts of the trend. Like people weren’t making fun of Matcha people weren’t making fun of quarter zips. They were making fun of the person who does all of those things, quarter zips Matcha, the fake glasses the reading on the subway, the tone of voice that sort of thing it wasn’t necessarily making fun of those traits. It was making fun of the person who does them performatively
