If you have access needs you need to pre book a access ticket in advance just like at any other venue. Especially for shows that will likely sell out. A lot of venues including this one only have a certain capacity of how many people they can have in certain areas including the access balcony. When it is full then that’s it. Otherwise they risk their license and it becomes unsafe.

The show wasn’t over capacity, there was plenty of space in side in the back corners, it’s just that everyone was crowded around the doors. I completely understand that the venue isn’t great for people with access requirements when there’s a sold out show, but if the balcony is at its legal capacity there’s not much they can do, especially in the academy’s. I’m glad the venue did manage to assist you but it’s a single flat floor venue with a small capacity balcony at the back, they can’t add a raised platform on the floor and they can’t make any adjustments to the building, I’m just not quite sure what you want them to do in the future? I work in the industry so interested to hear your thoughts, not having a go ✨

hey girl i just want u to know that you’re not alone!! the way the venue handled everything related to access was shocking last night im ambulant disabled and attend shows at manchester academy often and i’ve never had an experience as bad as this with them!! first the organisation of the access queue and box office queue was awful and no one knew where to go (not to mention the lack of space for wheelchair users bc the queues were so cramped together) i’ve never seen an accessible queue that long before especially at academy and they knew in advance how many people were registered with access needs and should’ve been prepared for this! why did we only have 1 security whilst ga had about 7? because of this, at doors they let around 20 general admission in for each person in the access queue (which defeats the entire point of having the queue skip!!!) and the lack of organisation meant that ambulant disabled entered before wheelchair users and it all just became a mess! i was also excited abt finally having physical concert tickets again and they ripped half my ticket as we went in ☹️having the queue skip in place helps me to avoid the stress of rushing with the rest of ga and means i can get into a spot with better ventilation but instead we ended up 15 rows back behind 6’2 men so we couldn’t even see for the majority of the show whilst queuing staff were actually helpful by giving out water because of the heat, and they also said that you could enter the venue with an empty bottle to get refilled at the bar. we got turned down at the bar despite this, being told they weren’t supposed to and we could just get a normal cup instead - it just seems like a huge amount of miscommunication unfortunately also off topic but people’s concert etiquette was awful!! we couldn’t see a thing behind these tall men and couldn’t move to the side (as it would then block a shorter girl’s view and i wouldn’t want to do that to someone) and when we could actually see there was another girl in front who held her phone as high up as she could for half the show to take photos so we had to watch the show through a phone :/

We edge ever closer to the end of live shows. The regulations and facilitations you need to make for disabled access are close to impossible for a lot of venues and building new venues that comply is even harder. Difficult conversations to be had around why so many venues are always over capacity on disabled access now too

i had this discussion the other day about accessibility in music events. there just isn't enough of it. any event I want to go to, thise spaces go really quickly. then i have to try and see if I could go in a,normal space, I am a wheelchair user

I’ve had a venue in Leeds tell me they’re fully booked for access seats and companion tickets.. I’ve been before there’s easily 50+ seats on the balcony you could just reserve me one of those? And as for running out of essential companion tickets.. unless the event is literally about to sell out I don’t understand how they can’t be available! It’s so frustrating to constantly be fighting and jumping through so many hoops to not even get a basic level of service

we had similar issues in Roundhouse. it was packed, extremely hot and crowded. as someone with adhd and asd, I was not in my comfort zone. barely any water handed out and no fans or cooling systems. didn't even know there was seating options, otherwise I would of purchased seating tickets above standing ones 🫤

thats awful. they were pretty good when I went to see punk rock factory a couple of months ago. only issue we had was that I went with my friend who basically cares for me during stuff like that and does all the bar runs, grabs any merch I need, keeps an eye on me if I have a fit etc, and despite the accessible balcony being basically empty and loads of empty chairs, they made him stand up for the entire show which made talking to each other between songs and stuff really difficult. I felt like a toddler having to tug on his tshirt or arm to get him to bend down if I needed to ask him something. there's definitely improvements to be made accessibility wise so we can enjoy gigs like everyone else

I've been moved to the accessible stand for her Glasgow show and am really worried about this. I have an email stating that I should have a booked seat there, but super worried i'll arrive and it'll be gone 😭 also super scared people will be mean because I have a mostly invisible disability

I'm fairly fortunate in that whilst I am disabled use crutches (that fold down) +other disabilities I can still navigate some steps so bought seated to reserve access to those in greater need of it. it would devastate me if someone got turned away because access was full. equally I can't stand for too long and when you buy seated and people choose to stand in front of you blocking view it can be quite heartbreaking. accessibility encompasses a wide spectrum and needs to be reviewed to ensure it meets the needs of all who need it , be more widely available, AND PROTECTED. especially in the case of the lady that went home that could have been avoided if the access needs had been protected.
