@meghannmcuniff: The judge who sentenced four men to life in prison today for murdering a rival gang member and rapper urged them to make good choices in prison because "each of you still have, has a life of value." "Going forward, the quality of the life that you had, have every day will come down to the choices you make, and so I hope that you continue to make choices, that you realize you do have value, and you can contribute," said Judge Michelle Sisco, who presides in Florida's 13th Judicial District in Tampa. A jury in May convicted Sean Gathright, 20; Isaiah Chance, 23; Rashad Murphy 32; and Davion Murphy, 29, of conspiring to murder Charles "Julio Foolio" Jones Jr. on June, 23, 2024. Judge Sisco followed the jury's recommendation and sentenced the men to life in prison without parole, instead of the death penalty like prosecutors wanted the jury to recommend. Gathright and the Murphys were the gunmen on June 23, 2024, outside the Home2 Suites hotel next to the University of South Florida while Chance stood by in the same hotel parking lot with his girlfriend, Alicia Andrews, after tracking Jones through the city. Jones was prominent in drill rap, which celebrates violence and mocks death, and was in Tampa celebrating his 26th birthday. He’d been shot several times before, including a shooting in Texas linked to one of the guns used to kill him. Judge Sisco said today (Monday, June 22) that she "almost fell out of my chair" when she heard in trial that Jacksonville is "the new little Chicago." "I can't even imagine anyone in Jacksonville wanting that comparison. So I was curious. I looked it up, and who knows if this is accurate? But apparently in Chicago last year there were 406 homicides, a quarter of that was gang-related. That's 100 about 104 people dead, poof, gone, gone. Gone for what? For what?" the judge said. "I don't know the whys, but I hope that the community does come together to end it, because Jacksonville just can't keep losing so many young men cut down in the prime of their lives," she continued. Jacksonville is like Chicago, so much hate here , Most of these young black men don’t have mothers or fathers in their life. Jacksonville worry more about petty crimes than the actual crimes that are destroying our city. Most cops are just as guilty!!

Now that I listened to the judge, I say this humbly: I felt the Spirit of God..a sense of sincerity and conviction..in the way she spoke. To me, it didn’t feel malicious; it felt grieved and measured. I believe consequences should exist, and it also doesn’t change my belief that we need to focus much more on prevention when it comes to youth. We have a large population of children growing up abused, neglected, without emotional regulation being taught, without stable fathers or present mothers, and without being raised with faith, guidance, and accountability. By the time we see the consequences in adulthood, many patterns have already been deeply formed. Prevention will always be easier than rehabilitation. I personally felt humility in the way she carried the responsibility of making such a difficult judgment. It’s unfortunate all around, but I think this case will serve as an example. 🙏🏼
