Filed this once when someone rear ended my brand new Atlas. I hadn’t even made the first payment. State Farm asked how much I wanted and I threw out $3500 and they looked for a few seconds and said that’s within the limit and approved it. It was not major damage but I wish I had done more research and requested more.

As someone who deals with these claims on a daily, majority of the time those claims are denied. Most people do not understand what they are claiming when making a DOV claim. There is a difference between inherent (stigma) diminished value and diminished value for physical damages. Inherent is not covered under the other persons liability coverage.

Also keep in mind as the vehicle owner it your responsibility to do all the leg work proving the diminished value! Insurance adjusters will not do it for you!

What if it’s hail damage? I had $20,000 damage to my 10 day old car. Traded it in a few years later and they gave me $4000 less than valued…could’ve I gotten diminished value $$ from my insurance?
