"civil engineer here, you-" you don't need spacers, especially with tiles with rustic/uneven edges (which you can see here). and she did a pretty bang on job for spacing. I think it looks great. also, yes, you CAN directly install tile onto drywall. if it was around bath/shower I can see issues with mold, but if the fan is used consistently and the drywall is primed, the chances of the drywall getting THAT wet is very slim. sincerely, kitchen bath designer/past tile shop worker.
