The workload has increased exponentially. I’m 22 years in and if you had told me 10 years ago that this is what teaching would look like I would’ve gotten out then. I also may have changed if you would’ve told me what we would need to be making to sustain life compared to what we were making 10 or 20 years ago for the same things. Every other profession people think is fine to increase pay, but for some reason, teachers are omitted. It is sad.

I also feel like they don't understand how drastically different districts and states can be. I made 21k my first 3 years. We go 200 days. I have to offer free unpaid tutoring after school, parent nights, etc. I must buy all supplies, including paper. What's so funny is that other professionals with similar degree requirements get 4-8 weeks of pto they can use whenever, I get none. So technically we work more than other jobs UNPAID. I wasn't even able to take 3 days off for my wedding cause my district doesn't allow us to extend a weekend both ways.😅

The “summers off” comment drives me crazy because I still work a lot during the summer. Also, I think teachers minimum pay should start at $75K. Teaching involves so much more time than the hours we put in teaching during the day. Finally, let’s not forget how much of our own money we spend on classroom items.

This is SO true!! Our salaries are not changing with the inflation like other professions. Yes, “we chose this” and I knew I wouldn’t be rich doing this..HOWEVER, I thought I wouldn’t be able to live without having to constantly play the battle of what groceries to get, what bills to pay, how are we going to pay off student loans, etc. And the pet peeve of mine is “you get 2 months in the summer off, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week at Easter, and other holidays”. However, what people do not always understand is our salary is not 12 month, it is 10 month because we are technically UNEMPLOYED for the summer & all holidays are given with leave taken and not for free. 🙄 people are not informed properly about the ins and outs of the teaching field.

They don’t ever have a problem with professional athletes only working part of a year and making millions. Not to mention when they’re injured and don’t even play. Baffling.
