@keckschoolusc: We’re zooming into tumors at the microscopic level, and the images reveal how cancer can take over healthy tissue cell by cell. Welcome back to Macro to Micro, where we zoom in on the science that surrounds us. Today, we’re taking a closer look at metastatic breast cancer in the lung through a common laboratory technique called hematoxylin and eosin staining, or H&E staining. The deep purple regions show densely packed tumor cells, while the surrounding pink areas reveal the structure of healthy lung tissue. As the tumor grows, it disrupts and reshapes the normal architecture of the lung. You’ll also notice red areas within the tumor, which can represent blood cells and supportive stromal cells that help form the tumor microenvironment. By studying these microscopic changes, researchers can better understand how tumors grow, spread and interact with surrounding tissue, insights that are critical for developing new cancer treatments. 📸 Microscopic image courtesy of Evanthia Roussos Torres, MD, PhD, at USC Norris and the Keck School of Medicine, whose work focuses on immune-oncology with a specific interest in breast cancer and the tumor immune suppressive microenvironment. #cancerresearch #cancerawareness #cancertreatment #breastcancer #BreastCancerAwareness
