What Happens When You Break Your Thighbone? . The femur is the longest and strongest bone in the body, and it takes tremendous force to break it. Most femur shaft #fractures occur after high-energy events like motor vehicle collisions, falls from height, and sports trauma in younger patients. In older adults, weaker bone from osteoporosis means even a simple fall from standing can fracture the thighbone. . These are serious injuries. A #femoralshaftfracture can cause significant blood loss, severe pain, obvious deformity, and the inability to bear weight. Because the thigh can hold a meaningful volume of blood, I treat every femur fracture as a potential life-threatening event and prioritize a full trauma assessment before anything else. The majority of these fractures require surgery. Intramedullary nailing remains the gold standard. A metal rod is placed inside the canal of the femur and locked with screws above and below the break, providing strong, stable, full-length fixation that allows early weight-bearing. When a fracture extends into the hip or knee, plates and screws may be the better option. External fixation is often a temporary measure for patients with multiple injuries who are not yet stable enough for definitive surgery. When possible, we aim for fixation within 24-48 hrs, since early stabilization lowers the risk of pulmonary complications and supports faster recovery. Healing can take 3-6 mos, and physical therapy is essential to rebuild strength, motion, and confidence. #brokenleg #orthopedic .
