Did you know: Acne is caused by a gram positive (thick peptidoglycan layer in the cell wall), rod shaped, non-spore forming, aerotolerant anaerobic bacterium called Cutibacterium acnes. It is part of the normal GI and skin flora, and then takes vulnerability of the pores in your skin and an unbalanced skin flora, and then infects the pores. This is why antibiotics like tetracyclines (like doxycycline and sarecycline), lincosamides (like clindamycin), sulfonamides (like TMP-SMX) and macrolides (like erythromycin and azithromycin) are used in the treatment of acne, since it is caused by a bacterium known as Cutibacterium acnes discussed earlier.
