There was a time in 8th grade when I was really struggling socially and constantly arguing with my parents. All I wanted was a pair of white Air Force 1s because, at the time, they felt like the one thing that would help me fit in. My parents refused to buy them, but my American uncle (we’re British) overheard me talking about it. He asked for my shoe size there and then, ignored my mum’s request not to get them, and had them sent to my grandparents so I could get them without anyone taking them away. It was such a simple act of kindness, but it meant the world to me. I’ll always be grateful that he saw how much it mattered and quietly made it happen.
