Very Dark Hair With Lots Of Grey? The Longer You Wait, The Harder It Gets! 🚨🤎 If you’ve been coloring your hair black or very dark brown for years and now have a high percentage of grey, there’s something very important you need to understand. The longer you continue covering everything with dark color, the more complicated your future color correction can become. And this is something I always encourage my clients to think about before waiting another few years. 1️⃣ First, We Need To Lighten The Old Color 🎨 The process is relatively straightforward in principle. We need to lighten the previously colored hair and try to create a more uniform, softer shade that blends better with your natural grey. But here’s the challenge. If you’ve been applying strong, very dark colors frequently for years, don’t expect to suddenly become a beautiful light brunette or blonde. You might only reach a mahogany, reddish chocolate or warm brown shade. And even that depends on your hair’s history and condition. 2️⃣ A Strand Test Will Tell Us What’s Possible 🔍 This is probably the most important step. If you’ve been coloring your hair every few weeks with very dark shades, the artificial pigment buildup can be extremely difficult to remove. But if you’ve been coloring less frequently, perhaps every three or four months, and haven’t repeatedly applied dark color through the lengths, you may have more flexibility. The only reliable way to assess your hair’s lightening potential is through a professional strand test. It helps us understand: ✅ How much the old color can lift. ✅ How much red, orange or warmth may appear. ✅ How the hair responds to the lightening process. ✅ Whether the condition of the hair can tolerate the correction. And even then, the final result may require more than one appointment. 3️⃣ You Have To Be Flexible About The Final Color 🤎 This is where I always ask my clients to keep an open mind. You might want a cool brown, but your hair may only allow us to achieve a warm chocolate. You might want to eliminate all the red, but the underlying pigment may not allow that safely in one session. Sometimes the healthiest achievable result is more important than chasing the perfect shade. And that compromise can be the beginning of a much better long-term hair color journey. 4️⃣ But What Happens If You Keep Delaying? ⏳ This is the question I really want you to ask yourself. Not just, “What if I don’t like the color after correction?” But also: “What happens if I continue coloring my hair extremely dark for another five or ten years?” You may accumulate even more artificial pigment. Your hair may become more fragile from repeated processing. Your natural grey percentage may increase, making the contrast with dark color even stronger. And if you eventually experience significant thinning or hair loss, your options for chemical correction may become more limited. Imagine reaching a stage where you desperately want to change your color, but your hair can no longer tolerate the lightening required. 5️⃣ Don’t Wait Until Your Options Become Extremely Limited 🚨 I’ve seen clients reach a point where removing years of dark color becomes a very difficult process. Sometimes the only realistic options are to gradually cut away the old color, accept a long transition or attempt correction over several carefully planned sessions. And if the hair is already extremely fragile, further bleaching may simply not be advisable. This can leave you dealing with unwanted dark lengths, strong grey regrowth and a transition that takes years rather than months. 6️⃣ Think About Your Hair Five Or Ten Years From Now ❤️ After more than 27 years in this industry, one thing I always encourage is planning your hair color for the future, not just your next appointment. You don’t necessarily have to stop coloring tomorrow. But if you already have a high percentage of grey and have been coloring your hair extremely dark, it’s worth exploring your options before the situation becomes more complicated.
