Vet tech here. It’s really easy to miss the signs of kidney failure in cats. Even people in field miss it in their own cats. Cats are notoriously good at hiding their discomfort. You did nothing wrong. I’m sorry about your furbaby ❤️🩹

My mom always say, “if you made the best choices you could, with the information available at the time, then you have nothing to feel guilty about.” I know that’s much easier said than done. I just want to say that you were clearly a wonderful parent, based on how much he loved you. That love is still with you ❤️

Kidney disease is such a silent killer, and cats often don’t show any symptoms until it’s too late, I’m so sorry you went through this 💕 know your baby is loved in heaven and you’ll get to see him again one day 🐱✨

Ugh same. He started showing symptoms and then 2 days later I lost him. The vet told us unfortunately, usually, once you start noticing symptoms it’s already too late. I miss my boy every single day 😭🤍

Don’t beat yourself up. People in these comments about the “feline grimace scale” are not helpful. These things unfortunately happen and there’s not going to be a perfect tell for it. You did the best you could for your baby. I have lost my 17yr old and 14yr old cats a year apart. One had a heart the size of a grapefruit but behaved totally normal for years. The other lost weight and body mass within weeks. He had “suspected lymphoma cancer” and kidney failure. There’s no turning back in either case. Illness often hits them hard and fast and they’re often very good at hiding it until they can’t anymore.

people piss me off, like you're all of a sudden a vet and can see every stage of the grimace scale in other people's cats from a singular video. Some cats have stank face some are always grumpy. You don't know this person or their cat and assuming to in the comments is just naive and ignorant.

Vet assistant here, it happens so often, and cats are amazing at hiding signs that they’re sick. It’s easy to look back and pick apart everything later knowing what ends up happening, but you can’t predict the future. You don’t have a crystal ball or a lab running bloodwork every few weeks. You don’t know what you don’t know and the people here saying otherwise are the morning after experts as always. My parents’ cat went from slightly elevated kidney values to end stage in 4 months and they had no idea. They were doing all the right things and it still happens.

I’m sorry girl. I lost my boy to kidney failure too. Kidney failure can be so quick and cats are good at hiding their feelings. Sending you so much love and healing. Your baby knows how much you love him❤️

To everyone saying routine checkups could have prevented this, my cat recently died of kidney cancer, the blood work came back fine when I brought him in and then the next week he started rapidly declining in health and that's when it actually came up on blood tests, by the time it was too late to do anything and the vet told me I couldn't have done anything sooner as the kidneys need to be 75% failing for it to even show up on tests. The last thing a grieving person needs is tiktok know it all's making the person think they should blame themselves when they shouldn't. Just because sometimes these things could have been caught sooner doesn't mean that it would have been any different even if she did.

I took my baby to the vet 3 months prior and got a perfect bill of health. 3 months later I went on a week long trip and my bf said he wasn’t eating. Come back and he had lost 8lbs. Took him in and he was in end stage renal failure. It happened so fast. He was 3 years old. I’ll never forgive myself for not recognizing the symptoms sooner. He was my soul cat and my life line. It’s been 4 years and I still feel empty without him. My perfect archie man

Don’t beat yourself up. The same thing happened with my 19-year-old cat. Cats don’t show their in pain until it’s really bad. All we can do is love them and do our best.❤️

My sweet boy had ZERO symptoms until he did and it was to late. Sometimes you really have no idea and vets are extremely expensive. I am so sorry for your loss!!!!
