Growing space in greenhouses and polytunnels (and Polycrubs) is precious, so growing vertical makes a lot of sense. One way that I do it is to train climbing plants to grow up strings. This is how I grow indeterminate tomatoes, melons, cucumbers, achocha, and even beans. If it can climb, I’d try this method! Securely attach a string to the ceiling/roof of your growing space directly above where you want to grow a climbing crop. I have bamboo canes tucked between the rafters of my space, but you could use hooks or other attachments. The string should reach the ground and be another couple of feet long. Next, dig a hole directly underneath and add amendments, such as organic fertilizer, if you wish. Place the string in the hole, then the plant and firm it all in. The string will stay tight thanks to gravity and the plant's roots growing through it. Although I prefer using natural string in the garden, I strictly use synthetic for this growing method. The reason is that natural string rots at the soil surface and if it does, the string’s tension breaks and the plant may fall down. It’s happened several times to me. As the plant grows, wind the stem around the string. Its tendrils will find it, too, and latch on.
