I take it a step further and say “it sounds like you’re hinting at something. What are you actually trying to say?” Call those toddlers out and help them learn how to communicate

As a neurodivergent person I completely agree, hints are a pet peeve, I can’t stand when people don’t just say what they mean

When you ignoring hints is just you hinting at their poor communication instead of just saying that you recognize what they’re doing like an adult

This comment section is a good example of how conversations can derail really fast too. I’m seeing both sides. I think this is interesting. I do see the value of subtle communication and direct, at the end of the day if someone you’re talking to isn’t that important to you & you have vastly different communication styles then that’s probably gonna be the end of that

indirect speech reduces vulnerability and embarrassment, and when you understand the norms around indirect speech, it is much more socially comfortable than direct speech. That's why most human brains have evolved to be fluent in indirect speech, and many cultures around the world absolutely require it in a huge number of situations.

No. It’s adult behavior to know how to respond to hints. But it also makes a difference on what the hint is about. You want the washing done or the window open? Yeah you can ask that directly. You have romantic feelings for another? Hints are okay

Hey man people communicate in more than just words. That’s not the only way to communicate. You can ask for clarification but purposefully ignoring all of the other ways humans communicate to only cater towards you is kinda weird.
