OTP Bypass Through Response Manipulation 🔐 In this security testing technique, we examine what happens when an application incorrectly trusts authentication data controlled by the client. The basic concept: 1. Enter an incorrect OTP in an authorized test environment. 2. Capture the authentication request/response using Burp Suite. 3. Inspect how the application communicates OTP verification results. 4. Check whether authentication success is actually validated by the server or whether the client can influence the result. 5. Confirm the behavior only inside a legal lab or application you have explicit permission to test. The security issue occurs when the backend relies on client-controlled state instead of independently verifying the OTP. A secure implementation should: • Validate the OTP server-side • Make OTPs single-use • Expire OTPs quickly • Limit verification attempts • Invalidate the OTP after successful verification • Never treat a client-controlled “success” response as proof of authentication This is useful for learning how authentication logic can fail and how penetration testers identify weaknesses in web applications. ⚠️ DISCLAIMER: For educational and authorized security testing purposes only.
