Today was a lot. Some days in rescue leave you feeling hopeful. Some days leave you heartbroken. Most days somehow manage to do both at the exact same time. Today, because of this community, we were able to get two more horses fully funded, in addition to the unhandled mom and her newborn baby. They are now out and receiving the care they need. The baby is currently getting fluids, plasma, electrolytes, and additional supportive care after arriving dehydrated with a mild impaction. We are cautiously optimistic and hoping he continues moving in the right direction. We haven’t named either of them yet, so I’d love to hear your name suggestions for both mama and baby in the comments. We also witnessed something that has stayed heavy on my heart. We watched as another mare was tagged and separated from her baby. Thankfully, another rescue stepped in and committed to keeping them together, but moments like that are a reminder of how fragile these situations can be and how quickly outcomes can change. The truth is, after all these years, it doesn’t get easier. I don’t think it’s supposed to. If it ever became easy to witness these things, I’d worry about what part of me I had lost along the way. What does get easier is knowing I/we aren’t carrying it alone. This community continues to grow. Our army continues to grow. More people are paying attention. More people are learning. More people are stepping forward and saying, “I am here— I see them.” That matters. Every person who reads a post. Every person who leaves a comment. Every person who shares a story.
