The FULL story is she lived in Russia as a kid FIRST. She had happy memories but went back as an adult and experienced a totally different reality.

There are many international universities in Russia with thousands of students from all over the globe, most are from African and Asian countries. They have been very much welcome for the last 70 years, still are. Sadly, racism still happens but much less often than in US or Canada.
