It ties the entire foundation together, helps resist differential settlement, and prevents moisture from rising into the superstructure. However, three common mistakes can severely affect its performance. The first is insufficient concrete cover, where reinforcement bars are placed too close to the surface, allowing moisture to reach the steel and cause early corrosion. The second is lapping reinforcement at the wrong location, especially at midspan where bending stresses are highest, creating a weak point in the beam. The third is inadequate stirrup spacing, which reduces shear resistance and weakens the confinement of the reinforcement cage. What makes these mistakes particularly dangerous is that they become hidden once the walls are built.
