In October 1582, a unique event happened because of the switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. To correct the calendar, 10 days were skipped: Thursday, October 4, 1582 was followed immediately by Friday, October 15, 1582. This means the dates October 5–14, 1582, did not exist in countries that adopted the new calendar at that time. The reform was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII to make the calendar more accurately match the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Not every country changed at the same time. Countries such as Spain, Portugal, Italy, and much of Poland adopted the new calendar in 1582, while others switched years or even centuries later.
