Interestingly, China's Pinyin was originally going to use the Cyrillic alphabet as its phonetic system 😂 During the Sino-Soviet friendship era, Soviet experts were pushing hard for it, but many Chinese linguists rejected the idea. They argued it would make it harder to connect with the international community in the future. So, they went with the Latin alphabet instead, and that's what we still use today
