As a Spanish speaker who read this book many years ago, this is the closest thing to my initial reaction upon reading it. Thank you for reading it and thank you for talking about it

in high school i wrote an essay about that book but did not choose to write about love, but how fermina’s father prohibits her from being with florentino, and how that decision changed her life forever. i dug deep into the pressure parents put upon their children, mostly in latin america (as a peruvian myself)

If you would like to keep exploring the literature of Latin America Clarice Lispector's writings are mandatory reading.

For Garcia Marquez would you recommend starting with Love in the times of cholera or One hundred years of solitude?

I would highly recommend diving into the rest of his work as well, besides the well known "100 years of solitude" I also quite enjoyed "No one writes to the colonel" and "Memories of my melancholy whores"

this is a great GGM first book, but if latin-american history and politics is also something you'd enjoy and want to read more, I highly recommend reading A Hundred Years of Solitude (maybe with a side-reading of The open veins of Latin American, by Eduardo Galeano)!
