every house we've been in, we tried keeping the windows shut and it was VILE! windows open all day and all night, blinds down all day and night and its always worked for us

From an Australian who spent years living in the hottest town in Australia with no air conditioning (well over 40 for weeks at a time), I can confirm this advice is correct. Windows and blinds/curtains closed during the day, windows open at night.
