@rachelreallyrecommends: Everyone assumes expensive mascara gives better lashes, but after years working in professional makeup, including at Playboy, that’s honestly not what I learned. The biggest difference isn’t usually the formula – it’s the brush. Long bristles are brilliant for separating lashes, shorter packed bristles can build volume, silicone brushes are fantastic for definition, and curved brushes help lift and curl. Once you understand what each brush is designed to do, buying mascara becomes much easier. One tip we used on set was never to rush your coats. Apply one coat, let it become slightly tacky, then apply the next. Three thin coats almost always look better than one thick, wet coat. Some mascaras can also be too wet when they’re brand new. I’ve found certain luxury mascaras (especially Chanel) perform much better after they’ve thickened slightly with a little use. Back then we were also applying two full strip lashes because individual clusters weren’t widely available. Makeup has definitely become easier, but good mascara technique still beats spending a fortune every time.
