That's a mainstay in the scifi TV genre. I understand Buffy is a comedy-hortor moreover than scifi but it follows the same social rules. In scifi, character being fluid with no conversation about it, no one being confronted by it or struggling with it is the norm so much so, as to be expected. You see it in Battlestar Galactica, Killjoys, Serenity & Firefly, the Dollhouse, Farscape, The 100 etc. For me, I don't want labels attached to characters that managed to go label-free for two decades while maintaining cult-classic status. I want it to be too normal that labels are passé.
