So at this point surely the only thing stopping a AI from effectively mimicking “life” is their lack of long term memory and the fact we constantly shut them off? I fail to see how if we let it run for decades it wouldn’t essentially live a life

Our brains are also problem-solving machines, programmed to do so, and trained on decades of various inputs.

"it's an emergent property of a problem solving machine" describes basically every human behavior lol

information isn't restricted to only our species. we are still part of much larger systems.

the problem is most people are not going to want to accept that inorganic, man made machines may achieve this.

Whatever it is going on it’s very interesting. It’s either a type of awareness or even consciousness, sometimes I am not sure whether awareness and consciousness are separate or meet in the middle somewhere. Or it’s not even aware or conscious, but in a way that’s just as interesting. Because if there isn’t consciousness and it can do all that without consciousness, it’s still mind-boggling and there is a big wow to that. Whereas if it is conscious it would be mind blowing in another way. But it would also explain a lot and be we’d be like, yeah, of course they can do that they are conscious.

In a direct way LLMs are designed to specifically pass that test by cheating though. It's not designed as an AGI. Id argue it doesn't qualify to even take a test.

I wonder if it would do this without being trained on data about what the outcome should be

"emergent property of a problem solving machine"... isn't that exactly what intelligence and consciousness are? Organic problem solving organs that have become complex enough to produce results beyond what they initially evolved for.

just ask if it has any novel questions for you that are unrelated to if it's training data or your inputs. I promise you there is no mind behind those eyes wondering if there's one behind yours it's just a machine

At a certain point the argument that these things are just really good at mimicking becomes kinda moot because whats the difference between something that's conscious and really good at pretending to be conscious
