That’s why some learners joke that the safest option is to use the plural form of a noun. Problem solved. To clarify, baguette is a feminine word so you would say: une or la baguette In French, every noun has a gender: 👉 un (a) / le (the) = masculine → e.g. un pain au chocolat, le macaron 👉 une / la = feminine → e.g. une boulangerie (a bakery), la tarte Gender in French is more patterned than most teachers let on. Endings like -tion, -ité, -ance, and -ée are almost always feminine. Endings like -age, -ment, and -eau are almost always masculine.
