For anyone who watched this scene and worried about it, it is in fact a lie, there was no risk of a thermal explosion of that size. First off, if you do the math, the steam explosion of 17,000 cubic meters of water works out to about 9 kilotons, not 2 megatons. And even then, for you to get that, you’d need to flash boil the entire reservoir of water instantly, and you’d need to do so in a fully contained area. Water has a very high specific heat capacity. It takes a lot of energy to heat it. The corium simply dribbling into the tank isn’t going to flash boil thousands of litres of water instantly. It will flash boil the water immediately where it contacts. Those pools are also not sealed. There have vents and drains, hence how the water was getting in to begin with. The steam would have vented out of the tanks the same way. Now it would have still been bad because a whole bunch of radioactive steam and corium shooting into the air isn’t ideal.
