@professor_cyn: Someday I’ll write about all of it. For now here are 35 random photos from our two-week Sonoma State University/Irish Heritage School course on the Great Hunger (an Gorta Mór) that took us around much of the island and deep into a history and legacy that is still being unpacked. Along the way we made sure to give ourselves time to have fun and enjoy each other’s company in one of the most breathtaking natural environments on earth. I’m so grateful for this whole experience and these people. Go raibh míle maith agat, Éirinn agus a muintir. #ssu #ireland #studyabroad

@professor_cyn✨: The final exam was a tribunal on the question of whether the Great Hunger constituted genocide under international law. Students presented arguments with evidence both for and against, and then debated for three hours. The sticking point was over intent, but ultimately they decided that intent can be found in willful neglect and the commitment to doing nothing to help in the face of their own (Britain’s) policy failures. The verdict: it was genocide.

Amazing that students from California would come here learning about the Famine! If you were in Skibbereen Heritage Centre you might have seen a display about the inquest of Denis McKennedy, the first official death of the famine. The vast majority of Irish people will never know the stories of our ancestors who died during that period. My husband is a McKennedy from the same area. It gives me goose-bumps that my children know the exact circumstances of this relative's death, exactly what and how little he had eaten in the week prior to his death and know his last words. I can imagine those words being spoken in my husband's West Cork accent. It's wonderful to know there are young people from so far away learning lessons from this sad chapter in our history.

The Irish people were forced to eat grass at the side of the road to try to survive. How could that not be genocide?
