@downtoinvest: Investing is a lot like picking out where & what to eat for dinner🍜
👉You pick out a restaurant first (Sushi, Chilis...) This is a lot like picking an account type (Roth IRA, Brokerage acct) & yes in a lot of cases people will have multiple account types you can think of that like going to a food court
👉You have to order something off the menu this is like picking an investment (getting there and not ordering anything is like opening a Roth IRA and only adding $ but not picking an investment)
👉At this restaurant you can pick between a single dish (aka an individual stock or bond) or a buffet option (aka an ETF or mutual fund) A single dish is more risk because what if its terrible, the buffet spreads out your risk because some things will be bad some will be great
👉With the buffet (aka ETF or mutual fund) you can choose from index (the chef follows a strict recepie) or an active fund (the chef can get creative with the ingredients)
Ordering off the buffet is easier and less risk but if you pick out a really good dish it could be wayy better than the buffet. All depends on what type of experience you are looking for.
Let me know if there are any other things you would like to see explained with analogies 🎉
