We remember together the first Syrian hero and the leader of the strugglers and sacrificers for the soil of our homeland, the Syrian General Yusuf al-Azma, who opposed surrender to the occupying French forces, who had issued an ultimatum to King Faisal I of Syria to surrender. On July 24, 1920, Yusuf al-Azma, who was then the Minister of War, refused to surrender to the occupiers and hand over the country without a fight to defend its soil. Yusuf al-Azma formed an army of 3,000 Syrian soldiers, consisting of volunteers armed with rifles, a few mortars, and light weapons, to face the French army, which numbered 9,000 soldiers supported by tanks, planes, and heavy artillery, advancing from the Syrian coast towards Damascus, the capital center at the time. The famous Battle of Maysalun ended with the martyrdom of Commander Yusuf al-Azma after an unequal battle lasting about 3 hours, in defense of the nation's honor, dignity, and freedom. In it, the Syrians inscribed the finest meanings of sacrifice for the dignity of the homeland, the rejection of foreign occupation, and the preservation of Syrian sovereignty. In the battle, 400 Syrian martyrs fell and 1,000 were wounded, who were later captured and some executed in military courts by the French occupation.
