@reinnpg: The Leopard 2 is a German third-generation main battle tank , developed by Krauss-Maffei in the early 1970s. It entered service in 1979, replacing the earlier Leopard 1 to become the main battle tank of the West German army . Various variants served in the armed forces of Germany and 12 European countries, as well as several others. Over 3,480 Leopard 2s were produced. The Leopard 2 first saw combat in Kosovo with the German army and also served in Afghanistan alongside Denmark and Canada for the International Security Assistance Force . There were two main development phases of this tank: the early versions, up to the Leopard 2A4, faced turret armor, and a series of "improvements," namely the Leopard 2A5 and newer versions, which featured arrow-shaped turret angles, additional external armor, and other enhancements. All models feature a digital control system with a laser rangefinder, fully stabilized cannon and coaxial machine gun, and advanced night vision and observation equipment (the first vehicle uses a Low Light Level TV (LLLTV) system, with thermal imaging projected laterally).
