It's frustrating but Don’t say: “What do I need to do to get promoted?” thats Too broad. and Too easy to answer with: “Just keep doing what you’re doing.” Instead say: “What would stop you putting my name forward for the next opportunity?” That question changes the conversation. Because now they have to name the actual concern. Second. If they say: “You just need a bit more time.” Ask: “What specifically needs to be true that isn’t true today?” Now “time” has to become evidence. Third. If they say: “You’re doing great, just keep going.” Say: “I appreciate that. But I want to understand what separates me from the person you would choose today.” That one is important. Because praise feels good... but praise alone doesnt move the needle for your promotion. Your goal isn’t to get your boss to tell you you’re doing well.
