I think this why reading out loud in class together is so important. You start to understand punctuation as an extension of your breath and it helps them learn how to pause or put emphasis on certain words!

lol mine are in 2nd grade and on day two we sat down and i read their writing exactly as it was written and we all had a good laugh at how silly i sounded and then we learned that we should prolly never forget punctuation again cus it sounds crazy lol

I started taking off points for every careless mistake, like no capitalization, no ending punctuation, etc. The only way they could get those points back was by rewriting it correctly. They eventually got tired of redoing their work and started writing like they were supposed to.
