Even the police have called the footage of their officers “shocking”. Police have been caught on video appearing to push over, punch, swing batons, and point tasers at a group of teenage girls in an incident the force involved has admitted is “nothing short of shocking”. Video circulating on social media shows officers trying to deal with a large group of young people in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, during a situation that quickly gets out of control over the weekend. One of the officers orders the rowdy teens to disperse, accusing them of “breaching the peace”. Amid the chaos, some of the girls push the officer who then appears to shove them back. As the unrest escalates, some of the girls fall over, batons are swung and tasers are pulled. Boys recording the footage can be heard yelling, “why’s he squaring up to them”, and “yo, he’s got the baton”. The Sun reported that clips of the altercation were posted on Facebook by a woman who said she was the mother of one of the teenagers involved, and that the incident, on Saturday, was a leaving party. The mother, who the publication did not name, said she “can’t believe” how officers handled the incident. “Surely trained professionals are expected to adapt their approach depending on a person’s age, vulnerability, gender, disability, or whether they’re sober or intoxicated,” she wrote. She further alleged that the police response had caused “fear and distress” to the teens, which “[escalated] the situation” and added that “children should be safeguarded, not traumatised”. South Yorkshire Police said the video appears “nothing short of shocking”. “Our PSD are reviewing this and all available footage, including Body Worn Video, of the full response to the 999 call to understand what happened before, during, and after what is publicly available,” a statement reads. “Their assessment will inform our next steps. At South Yorkshire Police, we want our officers to be professional and their actions to be lawful, proportionate, and fair.” Footage has been blurred to protect the identities of those involved. - @c5news
