If your hip thrusts feel like they’re doing nothing or you’re only feeling them in your lower back, this is probably why… You’re rushing your reps and letting momentum do the work, which means that your glutes never get a chance to activate. Here are cues to focus on to get the most out of your hip thrusts: ✨ PAUSE AT THE TOP That pause and squeeze at the top of the movement is important. It allows your glutes to fully contract and control the movement. Hold it for 1–2 seconds and actively squeeze, don’t just stop moving. Be intentional and focus on your mind to muscle connection. Your glutes should be FEELING IT during this pause, even on your first rep. ✨ SLOW DOWN Slowing down your reps, keeps tension on your glutes longer. Time under tension is key for building strength and shape. Going slower, eliminates the use of momentum and allows you to focus on all of the other cues mentioned in this post. ✨ CONTROL THE WEIGHT If you have to bounce the bar up or if you can’t get to max contraction at the top of your hip thrust, the weight is too heavy. You can load as much weight as possible on the bar, but if you aren’t actually controlling the weight, then you’re not getting anything out of the movement at all. Form is always more important than weight. ✨ KEEP A NEUTRAL SPINE & ENGAGE YOUR CORE Maintaining a neutral spine and engaging your core is crucial for injury prevention (specifically in lower back), isolating your glutes and maximizing muscle growth. You want the movement to be driven by your hips, not your lumbar spine. Tuck your tailbone and don’t round or arch your back, keep it as flat as possible. Keep your core tight by pretending that you’re pushing your belly button towards your spine and pushing your ribs downward (another cue is pretending like someone is about to punch you in the stomach lol).
