@seannalewanyj: Mentzer definitely went off the rails in his later years, and a lot of his specific programming recommendations are outdated based on what we know now. You don’t need to take every set to all out failure. You’ll almost certainly need more than one set per muscle at a higher frequency than once every 7-10 days to maximize gains. And you don’t need a bunch of intensifiers like forced reps and heavy negatives. But his pushback against aimless high volume training in favor of a higher effort, progression focused approach was spot on. More sets only equals more growth up to a limited point, and after that, you're just piling on junk volume that adds extra fatigue and joint stress for minimal to no return. Unless you just enjoy it, the goal isn't to go in and hammer yourself with the highest number of sets you can physically tolerate. It’s to use the amount of volume that allows you to progressively add reps and weight over time at the most efficient rate. And if you’re truly pushing your sets close to failure with good technique, the number of sets needed to accomplish that probably isn’t nearly as high as you think. P.S.
