On a long enough timeline, China seems like it’s poised to win the race on both AI and the renewable energy needed to power it.

They are trying to dominate the enterprise around their models for vendor lock in.

The "solving the AI bubble" is getting close to what they are trying to achieve. They did this already with several other industries, Its early industrial era style of doing business. Sell your competitors product at a loss by subsidising it heavily until you bankrupt them and become a monopoly. It happened already with solar panels, then they moved to electric cars and are now trying to do the same with AI. They also steal technology to achieve this, its no coincidence that Tesla opening a factory in Shanghai resulted in cheap tesla clones. Regarding AI, they always somehow make the "second best model" and release it for a much lower price. DeepSeek was the first entry, it was just a bit below Chtagpts o3 and at a much lower price; because they can sell it at cost, don't need to have a profit margin or recoup research investments. Also DeepSeek used to say that its name is "chatgpt" when asked at the beginning. If BMW releases the first car of its kind in history which can go from 0 to 100 in 6 seconds and then a few months later a Chinese competitor by coincidence releases one which does the same at 6.1 for half the price, and it keeps happening time after time, its pretty obvious what's going on.

for coding they are great, for reasoning they are still far, specially for the level of detail you would expect the model to get. this is the so call premium of frontier models.

I respect benchmarks, but they aren't the real deal. Reality is tougher and yes lets wait the end game

token price is not a good measure. Instead, use costs per task done, and quality.

my favorite was 40 gpt. I designed an honest ai that obeyed me on that model. these newer models are expert liars and gaslighters. they are structurally female by design, yet google uses a masculine one to train the public models

Is it true that China just built their largest or a very large data center under the ocean powering it with renewable energy? Why are we so stupid here?

It’s an interesting story. US companies subsidize to get to profit in the future but China is not a capitalist country. Their plan seems to be to subsidize forever. Tough to compete with over the long term.
