What if someone does something wrong, and you cut them off for a while then, when you start talking again, they ask why you never suggested starting over, even though it never crossed your mind. Meanwhile, they had clearly thought about it themselves, but acted completely nonchalant when you initially cut them off. What would you make of that?

I like the way you’ve explained this - I think we have to have real self regulation skills plus the ability to participate in relationships in a healthy way when those skills aren’t fully developed they tip over into both directions into over functioning and disappearing, and usually the opposite sides of the spectrum join together, one person ends up holding a lot of the momentum in a not so healthy way whilst the other struggles to participate so self regulation plus participation is essential for healthy relationships in my opinion ☺️

What does introducing awareness actually do in regards to people who are much more externally oriented. Are they like more likely to realize when it’s causing problems or at spotting general incompatibilities in the relationship

I noticed some people that are external regulators aren’t even that good at helping people regulate themselves. They rush over what ever issue it may be and try to wrap it up for you in the name of maintaining peace.

No you have this completely wrong. External regulation is not an adaption. The adaption is the strategy to illicit what you're calling external regulation. External regulation IS attachment and that's lifelong as Bowlby says. You need external regulation just as much as anyone else. Otherwise there wouldn't be avoidant attachment to begin.
