Most women don't wake up one day and decide they're okay with low effort. It happens gradually. A man does something small, you explain it away, then he does it again. Before long, what would've been a dealbreaker at the beginning has somehow become your normal. That's why I think it's important to pay attention to the little things. They're often the beginning of much bigger patterns. Here are 10 ways some men quietly condition women to lower their expectations.👇 --- 1️⃣ HE TELLS YOU HE'S "JUST NOT ROMANTIC" This usually comes up very early. He'll tell you he doesn't do dates, doesn't buy flowers, doesn't celebrate anniversaries, or isn't into Valentine's Day. It sounds like he's just being honest, but what he's often doing is setting your expectations low before you've even had a chance to develop them. Six months later, when you're disappointed, he reminds you that he "told you from the beginning." --- 2️⃣ HE MAKES YOU FEEL HIGH MAINTENANCE FOR WANTING NORMAL THINGS You mention that you'd appreciate a planned date, a thoughtful gift, or a good morning text, and suddenly you're made to feel like you're asking for the impossible. Over time, you stop asking altogether because you don't want to seem demanding. --- 3️⃣ HE STOPS MAKING AN EFFORT THE MOMENT HE KNOWS YOU LIKE HIM At the beginning, he was consistent. He planned dates. He replied quickly. He wanted to see you. Then, once he feels secure in the relationship, that effort slowly disappears. Instead of questioning why things changed, many women start convincing themselves that this is just what relationships become. --- 4️⃣ HE TREATS THOUGHTFUL GESTURES LIKE THEY'RE A HUGE SACRIFICE If buying you flowers, planning one date, or remembering your birthday is treated like you've asked him to move a mountain, don't ignore that. People usually make time and effort for the things they genuinely value. --- 5️⃣ HE ALWAYS HAS A REASON WHY HE COULDN'T SHOW UP At first, the excuses sound reasonable. Work has been busy. He's tired. He forgot. Something came up. Life happens, but if disappointment becomes the pattern and excuses become the response, you're slowly being conditioned to expect less. --- 6️⃣ HE JOKES ABOUT HOW LITTLE EFFORT HE PUTS IN Some men laugh about being terrible boyfriends. They'll tell you they never remember anniversaries or that they're hopeless at romance. Everyone laughs. Then you realize he wasn't joking. He was lowering your expectations in advance. --- 7️⃣ HE CALLS YOU "NEEDY" WHEN YOU ASK FOR CONSISTENCY One thing I've noticed is that some men don't want to increase their effort, so they try to make you question your expectations instead. Before long, you're apologizing for wanting regular communication or quality time, even though those are normal things to want in a relationship. --- 8️⃣ HE EXPECTS YOUR EFFORT WHILE OFFERING VERY LITTLE OF HIS OWN He enjoys your support, your attention, and your availability, but rarely asks himself whether he's giving you those same things in return. The relationship slowly becomes one where you're constantly pouring in while he simply receives. --- 9️⃣ YOU FIND YOURSELF SAYING, "AT LEAST HE..." This is one of the biggest signs that your standards have started to shift. "At least he doesn't cheat." "At least he texts sometimes." "At least he comes home." When you find yourself using the bare minimum to justify staying, it's worth asking whether your expectations have quietly been lowered over time. --- 🔟 YOU STOP EXPECTING MORE This is where the conditioning has done its job. You no longer ask for dates because you've accepted they won't happen. You stop expecting thoughtful gestures because you've convinced yourself they're unrealistic. You settle for whatever effort he gives because you've forgotten what healthy effort looks like. --- Which of these hit home? .
