Anyone claiming the price doesn't make sense hasn't tried to build a PC lately. A similar SFF machine will cost like 900+ and you still gotta assemble it. And it won't behave quite like a console with your TV even with Steam OS because that takes real work on the back end to do.

to anyone saying it's overpriced, go to pcpartpicker, and build a micro atx/itx PC with the similar/same specs. you'll be surprised. it's priced accordingly. ryzen 5 7600x, sff air cooler, b650m mobo with wifi, 16gb ddr5 ram (I used 5200), 512GB pcie4 nvme, rx 7600 8gb GPU, SFF case, SFX PSU (I used 750w). $1130

BUILD YOUR OWN. On all the post with people complaining about the price and calling the steam machine a console, when Steam called it a Gaming PC from the start. I have been telling everyone, the price Steam has posted is not too much more than what the base components for the SteamMachine cost, you can build you own SteamOS is FREE. That said I do recommend a AMD GPU because Nvidia does not like to support LINUX and SteamOs is a Linux Distro.

I feel like Steam OS was the selling point for those who want to tryout Linux for the first time. And honestly, $1000 isn't expensive for a beginner PC, but not a good bang for your buck.

unfortunately the price point is competitive with other similar specced pcs, consoles are sold at a loss that they recoup with 2 to 3 games

I think you also have to factor in that consoles are sold at a loss, these companies make their money on selling games and online subscriptions. If you do the math the steam machine ends up being cheaper over its lifetime but $1000+ is a lot to shell out at one time for some people. I have a pc so I won’t be buying one but I think they did the best with what they could l.

It’s far too much. People that are defending steam over this don’t make any sense to me. Their whole point was to bring console players to Steam, yet people want to be like well blank sells it at a loss. Why not do the same thing since Steam makes so much money on game sales? $750 is what this should’ve costed. You can get a prebuilt for the same price that’s a lot more powerful. It’s pointless. Plus there’s going to be a lot of games that won’t even work since it’s Linux. You don’t even get access to the full Steam library.
