CHECK 1: WHAT'S ACTUALLY RUNNING RIGHT NOW Open Activity Monitor (Mac: Cmd+Space, search Activity Monitor, CPU tab) or Task Manager (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Processes tab). Look for anything eating a ton of CPU that you don't recognize. Important: A weird process name alone isn't proof of malware. Totally normal background processes sometimes have cryptic names. This is a clue, not a verdict. Also worth noting: If Task Manager won't even open or looks disabled, that's itself a red flag. The FTC actually lists that as a malware sign. CHECK 2: RUN THE ACTUAL SCANS Run Windows Defender's full offline scan (not quick scan). It's already Malwarebytesuter and it's free. Then run Malwarebytes' free scanner as a second opinion because they catch different things Defender sometimes misses. Watch out: If some random "PC cleaner" app is already offering to fix everything for $40, that's not a scanner. That's the scam you're trying to avoid. CHECK 3: VIRUSTOTAL (IF YOU HAVE THE FILE) If you actually downloaded a file instead of just running a command, upload it to VirusTotal.
