The star on his forehead a reference to Eärendil, his grey mantle to Thingol (his name means "Grey Cloak/Mantle"), and therefore to Lúthien and Melian. His silver harp may be a symbol of the friendship between Men and Elves. Finrod played the harp when he first met Men. And Elrond's grandfather, Tuor, a Man, also played the harp! This could also be a reference to Maglor! But I prefer the Men version, since this whole image of Elrond points to his origins and the fact that he is the unifying link between Elves and Men. Vilya, Elrond's ring, is reminiscent of Gil-galad and Celebrimbor.
